Sanford Research/USD
World class research is being conducted in the Midwest. Sanford Research/USD is a non-profit [501(c.)3] organization formed by the
Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota and
Sanford Health and is dedicated to research excellence through the work of its Cardiovascular Research Center, Signal Transduction Center, Cancer Biology Center, Health Disparities Center, and Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases Center.
Central to the success of Sanford Research/USD are its 14 principal researchers and the approximately 70 research staff, students, and administrative personnel who support them. These faculty have secured $9,800,000 in research grants over the past 3 years and are recognized as leaders in the state's emerging research infrastructure. In fiscal year 2004-2005, research grants received have totaled approximately $4,100,000.
A quality physical environment has also been developed. Sanford Research/USD occupies a total of 15,500 sq. feet at two sites in the Sioux Falls community. The initial 3,000 sq. feet of research space is located in the lower level of the University of South Dakota School of Medicine's Health Sciences Building. This area includes 3 large 2-bench labs with 6 faculty offices, an imaging room, tissue culture room, and other associated conference and administrative spaces. The second site, with a total of 12,500 sq. feet, provides 5,000 sq. feet of dedicated lab space, 2,000 sq. feet of office space, 644 sq. feet of meeting space and a 1,344 sq. foot small animal research facility. All of these facilities are virtually new and include the most modern equipment.
Under the direction of Dr. M. Benjamin Perryman, the Sanford Research/USD is poised for continued expansion and leadership within the state, the region and beyond. Dr. Perryman joined the Cardiovascular Research nstitute in July 2003 and became the Executive Director in April 2004.
